11 to 18 December – Easter Island (Chile)

I don’t know why it was but the printout I had for the flight to Easter Island gave a 10.30am leaving time when I was actually 9.30am. It shortened the waiting time at the airport! It’s becoming obvious very quickly that not being able to speak Spanish is a huge hindrance here, not that people are not helpful but there are many who do not understand English. Smiling and drawing pictures does not always work! The flight took nearly five hours in a very new Boeing 787 and which was full. It was quite funny really for as soon as the plane took off everyone else took pillows and duvets then covered themselves so that it looked as if the plane was carrying mummies. The runway is 4 kilometers long extending to both sides of the island at a narrow point. This was done by NASA in-case a space shuttle had to land there. As the island is part of Chile there was no immigration to bother about but it did take an hour for my luggage to appear. I, and a Swiss man were met at the airport by the hotel owner of the Kaimana Hotel, and a four minute ride took us to the hotel.

The Swiss man, Luigi, only had a few days on the island so wanted to see as much as possible quickly. We both walked round the village of Rapa Nui which was the main and only one on the island then booked a whole day tour round the island for the following day.
