Uyuni is at an altitude of 3669 metres and is a very dry place being affected by the changing climate throughout the world in that they now do not receive the usual rainfall. The first visit of the morning was to the ‘Engine Graveyard’ so-called because a lot of British and French steam engines and railway items had been left there to rust away though looking at some it was obvious parts had been cut out to be used for the repair of other engines in the past.
The railway system was built in the middle of the 19th century by mainly European engineers, to join the east of of the continent to the west, having to cross the Andes to reach Chile, but the steam engines became obsolete and were discarded at Uyuni.
