27 and 28 April 2017 - Caye Caulter (Belize)

Caye Caulker is a small limestone coral island off the coast of Belize in the Caribbean Sea measuring about 5 miles (8.0 km) north to south and by less than 1 mile (1.6 km) east to west.

Looking out from the hotel room veranda I was able to see the sea on both sides of the island with it being quite small. It was a basic type of place but very pretty and very hot with plenty of places to eat cheaply. There were no sealed roads on the island which was not a problem at the time.  The first day here was spent walking round and looking at the sea and boats. At one of the wharves there were sting rays to be seen in the clear water where the fishermen were cleaning the fish.

The following morning some of us went on a snorkeling trip out to the reef, about a mile away, and I went in the water in what was called ‘Shark Alley.’ This was surreal with seeing sharks only metres away. The tour company that had the boat we went on made it very clear that they did not throw offal into the sea to attract the sharks, they were not in agreement with this at all. The sea at the reef was very rough so snorkeling was difficult for me so I did not stay in the water for too long.

The following morning we left for the mainland and to travel into Mexico.
